Art Education Programs in Stokes County
ANNUAL PROGRAMS
JUNIOR MOUNTAIN MUSIC
Students ages 8-12 have the opportunity to learn traditional instruments such as guitar, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and bass in classes across Stokes County. This is part of a music program offered by the Stokes County Arts Council named Stokes Junior Mountain Music.
The program, funded in partnership with the North Carolina Arts Council, offers low-cost group music instruction to 3rd – 7th grade students in Stokes County. Lessons are held on a weekly basis at The Arts Place and Dogwood Event Center in King.
“Access to music instruction, especially on traditional instruments, can be costly and there are limited places to receive that instruction in Stokes County. The Junior Mountain Music program gives the students a chance to join a group full of kids just like them who are just getting started with learning an instrument,” said Eddy McGee, Executive Director.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Stokes County residents graduating from one of the county high schools or an accredited homeschool who plan to major and pursue a career in an arts-related field are encouraged to apply for a Stokes Arts scholarship in the spring each year. Minors in an arts-related field will NOT be considered. A student currently attending an institution of higher learning with the same career goals may also apply. An institution of higher learning approved by the Scholarship Review Committee must have already accepted the student.
Our 2021 Scholarships may award up to $2,000. The amount of the scholarship is based upon the financial need of the applicant. The recipient may reapply every year while attending an institution of higher learning in an arts-related field. The scholarship will be paid directly to the institution only.
The Stokes County Arts Council may revoke the scholarship under the following conditions:
1. The student is not enrolled into the approved institution by the fall semester.
2. The student transfers to another institution after the fall semester.
3. The student does not maintain the institution’s academic or behavioral standards.
The winners will be selected by a committee made up of the SCAC Board of Directors and from the community at large. No immediate relative may serve on the committee and a teacher/instructor must recuse themselves from a vote of a known applicant.
Applications are due at the Arts Council office by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 19th, 2021. The committee will not consider late applications or incomplete applications that are not in the office by the close of business on March 19th. Applications are available from the Stokes County Arts Council website. Call 336-593-8159 for additional information. Applications are also available for students at the four high schools: Stokes Early College, North, South and West Stokes High Schools guidance departments.
