Bloody Blackbeard! is a pirate musical adapted by Laurelyn Dossett, who wrote the original songs and will also direct the music for the show. Laurelyn lives and writes in Stokes County. Her songs have appeared in film and television and have been recorded by many artists including Grammy-winning Levon Helm (Anna Lee) and Rhiannon Giddens of the Carolina Chocolate Drops (Leaving Eden).
Directing the pirate musical will be Peter Holland, who has worked for the Stokes County Arts Council for many years as an actor, writer, and director. Some of his many original productions presented in Stokes County include The Living Storybook, Mr. Lincoln’s Office, and Heaven on Wheels.
Sharing his thoughts about the upcoming production, Holland stated “I’m very excited to direct Bloody Blackbeard! It’s a dark story not meant for little ones. Part history, part legend, Blackbeard is a fascinating and terrifying figure. Laurelyn has written beautiful music for the show that conveys adventure and heartbreaking romance. We’re going to swashbuckler it up and have a great time with this show.” Holland concluded, “Come on board the Queen Anne’s Revenge with us this summer and play a pirate!”
