The inaugural Stokes Soup in a Bowl was created with a simple concept according to Stokes Arts Director Eddy McGee. “We want attendees to fill up on soup, take home a handcrafted bowl, and help support the food ministries of East Stokes Outreach, King Outreach and Northern Stokes Food Pantry.” “It’s just another opportunity for our organization to use the arts in service of Stokes County people” he added.
The event will take place on Saturday, November 21 at the Hanging Rock State Park Bathhouse, 1790 Hanging Rock Park Road in Danbury from 11am to 2pm. “It’s a similar idea behind the empty bowls projects that have happened throughout the country to end hunger, and we just wanted to put our own Stokes County spin on it” McGee added.
For $15 per person, attendees will choose their own handcrafted soup bowl, enjoy soup and a beverage, and listen to local bluegrass entertainment, with all proceeds being divided between the three outreach ministries. Local artists Phil Jones, Thad Cox, and Meridith Van Meter have been hard at work creating four hundred-fifty handcrafted soup bowls, with Stokes County Ag Extension Director Debbie Cox organizing the soup portion of the event. Attendees are also encouraged to bring canned food donations as well.
In addition to the Stokes County Arts Council, the event is supported by Hanging Rock State Park, Food Lion, Lowes Foods, and Family Dollar through the contribution of canned food, soup ingredients, gift cards, and volunteer support.
The event will take place rain or shine. “Even if it’s raining and cold, we’ll be there” said McGee. “It’s the least we could do, putting up with a little bad weather in service of others.”
Advanced tickets can be purchased at the Stokes County Arts Council, East Stokes Outreach Ministry, and King Outreach Ministry. Tickets will also be available the day of the event, as no one will be turned away until every bowl is sold and all of the soup is eaten.
