In the Apple Gallery: Elizabeth Shanahan

The Stokes County Arts Council is pleased to announce the opening of our upcoming exhibit of original paintings by Elizabeth Shanahan in the Apple Gallery from August 1-September 15.  An in-person opening will be held on Friday, August 13, 2021, from 5:30p.m.-7:00p.m. in the Apple Gallery of the Stokes County Arts Council 500 Main Street Danbury, NC. The opening will also include a film screening of “Nella Luce,” a dance film featuring painted bodies, in collaboration with Joy Shanahan.

Elizabeth is a professional artist living in Lewisville, NC with her husband, their four-year-old daughter, two rescue dogs and cat. Elizabeth’s work can be viewed on her website, elizabethshanahan.com and her Instagram, @elizabeth.shanahan. Joy is a student at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, where she enjoys hiking with her dog. She has created two dance films. Her first, “In the Thick of It,” can be viewed on her Instagram @shanahanmoves.

Elizabeth works in two-dimensional, mixed media painting. She experiments with different methods of gold leaf, stitching, and mixing painting and drawing techniques. Joy is a dancer and choreographer. Joy and Elizabeth collaborated on the dance film featuring painted bodies. Elizabeth explained: “It was a challenge on both sides, learning to work within the parameters of each other’s media to create one piece of art, but the result was one of the most rewarding projects either of us have ever worked on.”  “Nella Luce” is Italian for Into the Light, and the film project was conceived in the depths of the pandemic. The artists wanted to demonstrate that even when times are at their darkest, we have the ability to choose joy each day. “The light is there to find.”

Throughout her career, Elizabeth has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work including a residency at Camac Centre d’Art, Marnay-sur-Seine, France in 2015.  Her work was shown from Florida to New York and as far west as Arizona and at the Louvre Museum in Paris.  Her other exhibits have included

Spaces Between, a solo exhibition at Blowing Rock Art and History Museum, Blowing Rock, NC in 2016,

Descant, a solo exhibition at Looking Glass Gallery, Boone, NC in 2015, and Water, Sky, and the Divide, a two-person exhibition with Rebecca Bremer at Nth Degree Gallery, Boone, NC in 2016.  Joy has also received such recognitions for her work as the Dance Rising Junior Award, Dance Masters of Southern Council Jazz Scholarship, Top Ten Miss Dance, and Star Talent Nationals.

Elizabeth completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art with honors, concentrating in painting and drawing from Appalachian State University and graduated summa cum laude.  Joy is a Senior dance major, finishing a Bachelor of Arts at Appalachian State University as well as seven years dance training at Dance Dynamics Studio with Missy Fincher and Ronnie Zinc.

This exhibit will be on display August 1-September 15, 2021 in the Apple Gallery. The Stokes County Arts Council is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, Saturday, 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. and Sunday 1:00pm-6:00pm.
